Sam, the toilet trained and leash walking cat

25 October 2008 2 Comments

Here’s a surprising article about Sam, another toilet trained cat. Helen Flaster who rescued Sam when he was just three months old and took him home to her brood of 25 other pets, said,

“I looked it up online, and as soon as I realized that it does happen and that there [are] a handful of cats in the world who use the toilet, I [thought], ‘Sam is going to be one of them if he’s smart enough.’ And sure enough,” she says proudly, “he picked it up. He picked it right up. He’s happy to do it.”

Flaster happily notes that visitors are frequently surprised when she tells them she has a cat because of the lack of smell.

“People come over and they’re, like, ‘You have a cat? I can’t smell your cat.’ ” Elliston, who leaves the toilet seat up for Sam, laughs.

She also reports that Sam doesn’t claw furniture. She uses the expression, “He doesn’t scream for attention like that.” I’ve read that the more you train your cat in general, the better he’ll be about not clawing. As much as we may get the impression that cats don’t like attention or training, they seem to do better when we do put some time into training them – even for tricks like “sit”, “come”, etc. I didn’t think it was possible to train cats in this way, but I got a book about it and taught my cat Kiku some simple commands like “sit”, “come”, “turn around”, “sit up”, etc. I was amazed at how he learned even more quickly than my German Shepherd and also how his attitude seemed to change for the better.

The 20-pound-plus cat is also unique in that he’s one of just a handful of cats who goes for walks on a leash.

A white-and-gray tabby with a handsome, round face, he wears a black-and-white harness around his midsection, in addition to his collar. A matching leash clips to a buckle on his harness, located just between his shoulder blades. He stands at the intersection of Robinson and Tenth Avenue as Nicky Elliston, his owner, crouches at his side, petting him; he is not a fan of this particular intersection and looks a little peeved.

Oh yeah… Earlier, I mentioned that Flaster has 25 other pets besides Sam! Amazing…

Their family pets number 26: seven dogs, seven cats, three horses, two goats, two tortoises, two turtles, two birds, a miniature horse, and a few tankfuls of fish.
